This department was established with the establishment of provincial councils in 1989 for food-related agricultural development in Sabaragamuwa province. 45 Agriculture Advisory Offices are operating under 07 Assistant Agriculture Director Regions through the two Deputy Agriculture Directorate offices in the two administrative districts of Ratnapura and Kegalle. The extension officers of these agricultural advisory offices work closely with the farmers regarding the cultivation activities in their respective office areas and constantly work to improve the food security and living conditions of the farmers in the province.
There are two district agriculture training centers and a service editing training institute in the province. The two tissue culture laboratories produce tissue cultured fruit plants while the Central Plant Nurseries and the two District Agriculture Training Centers produce high quality fruit plants. The mushroom seed center produces the mushroom seeds and the soil laboratories test the soil samples and provide reports. The Marukwathura Farm consists of a rich coconut plantation within 33 acres.
The province of Sabaragamuwa has various agro-ecological characteristics.Annual rainfall in 2500mm to 3360mm and the temperature ranges from 9 to 33 degrees Celsius. According to the annual rainfall, it belongs to the dry, intermediate and wet regions, and according to the altitude, it consists of all the lowcountry, midlcountry and upcountry regions. It mainly consists of red yellow podzolic soil and red brown latazolic soil types.
Considering the land use pattern of the province, the total land area of the province is 496,800 hectares. Most of this land area is plantation and agricultural land. The cultivated area of major agricultural crops is 36,970 hectares of Paddy lands. Vegetable cultivation area is about 5733 hectares and fruit cultivation area is about 7624 hectares. Supplemental food crops and other are 3441 hectares. Paddy cultivation is carried out under Mahavari, Sublivari and Rain fed conditions.
